President Trump stunned the world when he did what his predecessors all promised to do, but ultimately lacked the courage to follow through on – officially recognize Jerusalem as the capital city of Israel.
It was a move that a majority of Americans had long demanded, and, naturally, it was widely celebrated in Israel.
Predictably, liberal Europe was less enthusiastic about the announcement, and, in a surprise to absolutely no one, the Arab world erupted in outrage.
Just prior to Trump’s announcement, the top Palestinian representative in the UK warned that the president would be effectively declaring war on the world’s Muslim population by “giving” the Holy City to the Jews.
Via the Daily Mail:
“If he says what he is intending to say about Jerusalem being the capital of Israel, it means a kiss of death to the two-state solution,” Manuel Hassassian said in a BBC radio interview.
“He is declaring war in the Middle East, he is declaring war against 1.5 billion Muslims [and] hundreds of millions of Christians that are not going to accept the holy shrines to be totally under the hegemony of Israel,” Hassassian added.
Of course, by now we all know that Trump did indeed “say what he was intending to say about Jerusalem,” and that for all the Palestinians’ blustering, the Muslim world did not go to war against either Israel or America.
There’s a new sheriff in town, and it would seem more and more nations to coming to realize that.
They might hoot and howl over his decisions, but very few are actually going to test Trump’s resolve.
